Peculiar Primate

© javarman/Shutterstock.comThis bizarre creature of the night might look like the stuff of horror movies, but it is actually a type of primate superbly adapted to fishing out wood-boring insects from the trunks of trees. A lemur found only on Madagascar, the Aye-Aye is that island’s answer to the woodpecker. To locate hidden grubs, this specialized animal taps on trees with spidery digits to locate hidden prey and gnaws holes in the wood with large slanted lower incisors. With a very long thin middle finger it then probes, spears, and extracts its hidden meal.
